8th Grade Math (May 2-6)

8th graders have been so busy taking Diocesan Assessment Tests, that our Unit 7 Test has had to be delayed.  On Monday, it is happening!  This is a challenging test, but the 8th graders have worked hard to master the concepts.  Encourage them to take their time and avoid silly mistakes.  When that test is complete, we will take a break from our textbook and do some work with algebra concepts, to help them to be “ahead of the game” in Algebra next year.

Monday:  Unit 7 Test
No assignment.

Tuesday:  Finish Unit 7 Test
No assignment.

Wednesday:  Algebra

Thursday:  Algebra

Friday:  Algebra

7th Grade Math (May 2-6)

7th graders will finish the Unit 7 Quiz this week; then we will move on to reviewing the many kinds of graphs that we have worked with.  This includes circle graphs, bar graphs, line plots, stem and leaf plots, and box and whisker plots.  Remember that each students must use at least one of these graphs as they present their interesting findings on a topic that interests them related to health and fitness.  Have you chosen a topic yet?  We will finish the week working with quadrilaterals.

Plan on the Review & Assessment early next week, followed by the Unit 7 Test.  We will begin presenting the “Health and Fitness Projects” on Thursday of next week.

No assignment.

Tuesday:  Circle Graphs

6th Grade Math (May 2-6)

6th graders will continue their work with circles this week, as we  spend a second day on area of a circle  and volume of a cylinder.  Then we will spend a couple of days working with integers (the whole numbers and their opposites {…-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3…}), comparing them and graphing them on a coordinate grid.  We will work on the Review & Assessment on Friday; then have the Unit 7 Test early next week.  Plan that the “Wonders of the World” project will be due about mid-week next week.

8th Grade Information (April 26-29)

8th grade students will be taking the Diocesan Assessment for Science during their Finance Park class time this week.  This test usually takes 2-3 class periods.

8B will be presenting the mass on Wednesday, April 27 at 8:45 a.m. in the church.

The Spring Music Program and Band Concert will be at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 in the gym.

“Get Your Game on for Gordon” 3 on 3 middle school basketball fundraiser will be Friday, April 29 from 4:00-9:00 p.m. in the Lourdes gym.

8th Grade Math (April 26-29)

Testing…testing…testing!  That’s what 8th grade math will be busy with this week.  We will finish our practice test review on Tuesday, and perhaps do a general review for the Diocesan Assessment Test.  We will spend Wednesday and Thursday on that test.  Then we will finally be ready to tackle the Unit 7 Test for which we have been preparing.  Try to get a good night’s rest each night this week, so you can do well on this testing and really show what a fine knowledge base you have acquired at Lourdes Catholic School.  Enjoy a nutritious breakfast before coming to school in order to fuel a fine performance!

Tuesday;  Final Review Day for Unit 7 Test and Diocesan Assessment Test
No assignment.

Wednesday:  Diocesan Assessment Test-Math
No assignment.

Thursday:  Finish Diocesan Assessment Test- Math
No assignment.

Friday:  Unit 7 Math Test
No assignment.

7th Grade Math (April 26-29)

7th grade students continue their work that we started before Easter Break on Solving Inequalities.  They helped me write inequalities before the long weekend.  This week, we will also work on solving inequalities.  We will review key concepts about Box and Whisker Graphs, then actually work on making one ourselves.

Plan on the Unit 7 Quiz on Thursday.  If most students finish that day, we will go on to Circle Graphs on Friday.

It’s time to begin researching a topic related to health and fitness for the Unit 7 project.  I gave the students several web sites and blogs to explore as they searched for an idea.  Choose a topic, compile your findings, along with at least 1 type of graph, onto a poster.  Then be prepared to present your information to the class.  This will be due after the Unit 7 Test, which will be about a week and a half from now.

Tuesday:  Solving Inequalities
Do p. 495-496 (9-19)

Wednesday:  Making Box and Whisker Plots
Do p. 496-497 (20, 23-32)

Thursday:  Unit 7 Quiz
No assignment.

Friday:  Circle Graphs
Do p. 507-508 (1-11)

6th Grade Math (April 26-29)

This week, 6th graders will be focusing on the circle.  First, we will clarify all the parts of a circle.  Then, we will move on to finding circumference and area of a circle.  Finally, we will expand on area of a circle, multiply it times the height of a cylinder, to find the volume of that cylinder.

Now would be a great time to decide which 4 places to include on the “Wonders of the World” poster.  Begin to research those places, looking for interesting information to share about that place, as well as an informative mathematical fact.  Don’t forget to note all sources in order to give credit to the books and/or web sites that helped you with your research.

Tuesday:  Parts of a Circle
Do p. 494 (1-7, using Labsheet 4A)

Wednesday:  Distance Around a Circle (Circumference)
Do p. 494-495 (8-16, 19-27)

Thursday:  Area of a Circle
Do p. 505 (1-12)

Friday:  Volume of a Cylinder
Do p. 506 (14-20, 23-33)

8th Grade Information (April 18-21)

We enjoyed lots of exciting events this week, so I’d like to share some photos as part of my 8th grade info blog.  1.) The 8th grade students were confirmed at mass last Saturday evening.  We enjoyed having Bishop Amos visit and preside over a special sacramental mass.  2.) Please check out the prayers for our school which were written by our 8th grade/2nd grade prayer buddies.  They are showcased on the front bulletin board near the office.  3.) And finally, our visit to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago was such a great day.  It was enjoyed by students and teachers alike.  There was so much to see!!!  From submarines to coal mines to storms and the human body…it was a great day of learning.

8th Grade Math (April 18-21)

The focus of 8th grade math this week is on reviewing and taking the Unit 7 Test.  Since there is a lot of challenging material in this unit, we are going to spend a bit more time on review than we normally do.  I want to do what I can to make sure the students have mastered this material.  Many of the concepts covered in Unit 7 will also show up on the 8th grade Diocesan Assessments, which must be completed before April 29.  Plan on taking that test next week.  All 8th graders, whether in 8th grade math or Assumption Algebra, must take the Diocesan Assessment Test.

Monday:  Review & Assessment
Do p. 532-533 (1-31)

Tuesday:  Practice Test for Review
Finish the test for homework.

Wednesday:  Unit 7 Test
No assignment.

Thursday:  Finish Unit 7 Test
No assignment.

7th Grade Math (April 18-21)

Because of this weekend’s weather, I am guessing that the planned “Journey Through the Park” will be postponed.  Therefore, my week’s plans will include plans for Monday.  Our focus in 7th grade math this week will include work with customary capacity (fluid ounces, tablespoons, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons). We will also be working with inequalities and taking the Algebra Aptitude Test.

Monday:  Customary Capacity and Inequalities
Do p. 494-495 (1-8)

Tuesday:  Algebra Aptitude Test
No assignment.

Wednesday:  Finish Algebra Aptitude Test
No assignment.

Thursday:  Solving Inequalities
In class, we will work on p.  495-496 (9-19)
