7th Grade Math (Sept. 28-Oct. 2)

7th graders spent the day on Friday experiencing functions with technology.  Along with learning how to graph an equation on the graphing calculator, they also learned to adjust the window to show a one quadrant graph and a four quadrant graph.  Then students used the laptops and worked with The Function Machine to see that…for every input, there is exactly one output.  This week, 7th graders will be writing and solving equations.  They will also be completing their Search and Rescue project and preparing for the Unit 2 Test.

6th Grade Math (Sept. 28-Oct. 2)

This week in 6th grade math will be a bit different from “the usual”.  Students will take their Unit 2 Quiz on Monday, then spend the remainder of the week working on a project to experience the math concepts of transformation:  translation, rotation, and reflection.  Each student will choose a quilt pattern that is historically accurate.  They will recreate the pattern they choose using glue and wallpaper.

Monday:  Unit 2 Quiz
No assignment.

Tuesday:  Quilt Making (Translations, Reflections, and Rotations)
Choose quilt pattern and make pattern pieces for tracing wallpaper pieces.

Wednesday:  Continue Quilt Making
Cut pieces from wall paper.

Thursday:  Continue Quilt Making
Glue pieces onto background paper.

Friday:  Finish Quilt
Finish gluing pieces and add finishing touches to quilt project.

8th Grade Math (September 21-25)

8th Graders presented their “Amazing Facts” poster projects this week.  Most of them were very good.  However, half the class was at least a day late turning in their piece, so I was disappointed with that.  Please encourage your son/daughter to maintain control of due dates and not put off long term assignments until the last minute.  We talked about proactive vs. reactive behavior and how late work will not help them get maximum points for their efforts.

This week we will be working with probability.  I am planning the Unit 2 Quiz for Friday.

Monday:  (re-work Friday’s assignment) Samples and Percent
Do p. 92-93 (13-20, 22, 26-34) plus 4 long division problems.

Tuesday:  Estimating Percents
Do p. 101 (1-7) plus long division practice.

Wednesday:  Percent of Change
Do p. 102-103 (8-10) plus long division practice.

Thursday:  More Percent of Change
Do p. 105 (1-13) plus long division practice.

Friday:  Theoretical Probability
Do p. 116-117 (1-7,9) plus long division practice.

Monday:  Experimental Probability
Do p. 118-119 (10-19, 21-29) plus long division practice.

Plan on the Unit 2 Quiz for Tuesday.

7th Grade Math (September 21-25)

7th graders have been working hard to understand the rules for adding and subtracting integers.  We even sang a song (to the tune of YMCA) about subtracting integers on Friday!  On Monday, they will show me how well they are mastering these concepts when they take the Unit 2 Quiz.  Then we will move on to functions.  Encourage your son or daughter to work with The Function Machine to practice “finding the rule”.

Each week, we take a day to use the math skills we have been working on and continue our search for the missing pilot whose plane went down in the Australian Outback.  Our search is progressing!

Monday:  Unit 2 Quiz
No assignment.

Tuesday:  Planning a Search
Use Project Labsheet B, to continue searching for Gina.
For homework, do p. 115 (1-35, 1-2)

Wednesday:  Modeling a Function
Do p. 125-126 (1-24)

Thursday:  Graphing a Function
Do p. 126-128 (25-32, 37-43)

Friday:  Graphing a Function (continued)
Do p. 129 (1-21)

6th Grade Math (September 21-25)

After working with polygons and symmetry last week, the 6th graders are moving on to fractions this week.  We’ll be using geoboards, pattern blocks, and graphing calculators as we explore fractional concepts.  Plan on the Unit 2 Quiz next Monday.  Remember, the Review & Assessment pages at the end of the unit are a great study guide for quiz/test preparation.

Monday:  Fractional Parts
Do p. 102-103 (1-4, 5ab,7-11)

Tuesday:  From Part to Whole
Do p. 103-104 (13-17, 20-29)

Plan on the Unit 2 Quiz for Monday, September 28.

8th Grade Information (September 14-18)

On Thursday, September 17, 8th graders will host another “Healthy Food Sale”.  This month it will take place in Mrs. Gordon’s room.  Last month’s sale went very well.  We had more than enough food, so please send just a bit less food this time.  Remember to maintain the healthy food guidelines…less than 15 grams of sugar per serving and less than 40% fat per serving.

8th Grade Math (September 14-18)

8th graders have been working on graphing area in relation to perimeter for various sized rectangles.  They are creating some interesting non-linear graphs.  After taking the Unit 1 Test, students will be presenting their “Amazing Fact” projects.  I’m looking forward to seeing their posters.

7th Grade Math (September 14-18)

7th graders began their Unit 2 Search and Rescue project on Friday.  They will be working in pairs to plan and execute the search for a pilot named Gina, whose plane went down in the Australian Outback.  The students will continue to work on this project throughout the unit, using the math that is presented in Unit 2.  It is important that students keep track of all of the materials related to this project because all work will be turned in after the Unit 2 test.

Last year, students were introduced to The Maze Game.  It is a great activity to practice coordinate graphing.
