8th Grade Math (Jan. 31-Feb. 4)

8th grade students will have the Unit 5 Test on Tuesday/Wednesday of this week.

On Thursday, students will be demonstrating their ramps, so it’s time to begin constructing them.  Be sure to create a plan before building!  Plans should include the angle measure (tangent) as well as the height of the ramp (opposite) and the length of the ramp (adjacent).  Refer to the work we did on p. 367 to help you.  Be sure to practice moving objects up the ramp.  Try “loads” of different sizes and weights.  Choose cylinders that work well to move the item.

We will then begin a unit entitled “Architects and Engineers”.  This unit begins with lots of experience doing 3-dimensional drawings.  We will use isometric dot paper to help us be successful.

Monday:  Review & Assessment
Do p. 390-391 (1-32)

Work on building your ramp.

Wednesday:  Finish Unit 5 Test

8th Grade Math (Jan. 24-28)

We worked on a brand new concept in 8th grade math last week…tangents.  Students learned how to find the tangent by dividing “opposite by adjacent”.  Some of them were a bit “wobbly” and unsure of themselves at first, but by the end of the second day of working on the concept, I think they were all feeling in control of the material.  It is very gratifying to watch their understanding grow and their confidence improve too!

This week we move on to permutations and combinations, which they were introduced to last year.  We will also be working with Pascal’s Triangle and probability.

Permission slips go home on Monday for the St. Jude Math-a-thon.  Please encourage your 8th grader to participate in this fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.  They can support the groundbreaking work that is done there to fight childhood cancer and other diseases.  This is considered an acceptable service project for Confirmation preparation.  Math-a-thon Funbooks go home on Friday, January 28.

Monday:  Counting and Permutations
Do p. 378 (1-12)

Wednesday:  Building a Ramp/Pascal’s Triangle
We will work on p. 381 (1-10, 1-2) in class.  No homework due to NET Retreat.

Thursday:  Probability and Counting
Do p. 386-387 (1-7, 11-13)

Friday:  Review & Assessment
Do p. 390-391 (1-32)

Be ready for the Unit 5 Test on Monday/Tuesday of next week.

7th Grade Math (Jan. 24-28)

7th graders will be working with a variety of graphs this week, including histograms, scatter plots, and box and whisker plots.

They will also be working on another project that involves planning a zoo tour.  In the 3 1/2 hour tour they are planning, they must make sure their group stays 30 minutes at each continent’s exhibit (North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, South America) and witness as many feeding times as possible.  Information for this project is on p. 326 in the textbook.

On Monday, permission slips go home for the St. Jude Math-a-thon.  Please encourage your 7th grader to participate.  This is a service project that is acceptable for Confirmation preparation.  It is also a wonderful way to support the amazing work that is done each day in Memphis, TN at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  They are making great strides in the successful treatment of childhood cancer and other diseases.

Monday:  Histograms
Do p. 323-324 (17-18a, 19-30)

Tuesday:  “What’s For Lunch?”
Design a zoo tour.  Include as many exhibits and animal feedings as possible.

Wednesday:  Cross Products
We will work in class on p. 337-338 (1-10).  No homework due to NET Retreat.
3rd Quarter Notebook Check

Thursday:  Scatter Plots
Do p. 338-339 (12-13)

Friday:  Box and Whisker Plots
Do p. 340-341 (16-27)

6th Grade Math (Jan. 24-28)

6th graders continue to work with fractions this week, as well as customary units of length.  Converting units of length can be a tough concept to master, because borrowing tens does not work when it is necessary to rename feet to inches or yards to feet.  We will work on this in math class, and hope to achieve mastery.

Our project with Unit 5 is “An Exhibit of Everyday Objects”.  Students are to find an item that they see/use regularly around the house that has a beautiful design.  Some items students have brought in, in the past include salt shakers, a guitar, a hairbrush, a napkin holder.  It’s a chance to notice the beauty in items that we generally take for granted.  6th graders are to sketch the item and label its dimensions.  Please do not bring the item to school until the end of the unit.

Permission slips go home on Monday for the St.Jude Math-a-thon.  Please encourage your 6th grader to participate.  The staff at St. Jude do remarkable work, and the groundbreaking research that is done there is shared with medical teams around the world.  It’s a wonderful chance to help others and show gratitude for our gift of good health.  Math-a-thon Funbooks will go home on Friday, Jan. 28.

Monday:  Common Denominators
Do p. 317-318 (16-27, 31-36)

Tuesday:  No Math class today; Field trip to Putnam IMAX

Wednesday:  Investigating Benchmarks
We will work on p. 328 (1-13) in class.  No homework due to NET Retreat.

Thursday:  Converting Customary Units of Length
Do p. 328-329 (14-32)

Friday:  An Exhibit of Everyday Objects
Sketch an object you see at home that is beautifully designed.  Measure the length, width, and height of the object and include those measurements on your sketch.
Do p. 331 (1-25)

8th Grade Math (Jan. 18-21)

8th graders begin the week with the Unit 5 Quiz.  Then they will be ready for a new challenge: the tangent ratio!  This is a concept they have not had before, but I am confident that they will master it if they use what they already know about right triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem to assist them.  Once they understand tangents, they can use this concept as another building block for their ramps.

Tuesday:  Unit 5 Quiz
No assignment.

Wednesday:  Complementary and Supplementary Angles
Do p. 364 (1-22)

Thursday:  The Tangent Ratio
Do p. 364-366 (23-30, 32-34)

Friday:  Building a Ramp
Do p. 368 (1-22, 1-2)

7th Grade Math (Jan. 18-21)

Because the majority of 7th graders needed an additional day to complete their Unit 4 Test, our film festival has been rescheduled for Wednesday.  On Thursday, we will begin a new unit called “Recreation”, which will involve lots of work with ratios, proportions, and percents.

Tuesday:  Finish Unit 4 Test
No assignment.

Wednesday:  Zoetrope Film Festival
Be sure your poster and strips are complete and ready to show right away at the beginning of class.

Thursday:  Ratios and Proportions
Do p. 321-322 (1-12)

Friday:  Stem and Leaf Plots
Do p. 322-323 (14-16)
