6th graders continue to work with fractions this week, as well as customary units of length. Converting units of length can be a tough concept to master, because borrowing tens does not work when it is necessary to rename feet to inches or yards to feet. We will work on this in math class, and hope to achieve mastery.
Our project with Unit 5 is “An Exhibit of Everyday Objects”. Students are to find an item that they see/use regularly around the house that has a beautiful design. Some items students have brought in, in the past include salt shakers, a guitar, a hairbrush, a napkin holder. It’s a chance to notice the beauty in items that we generally take for granted. 6th graders are to sketch the item and label its dimensions. Please do not bring the item to school until the end of the unit.
Permission slips go home on Monday for the St.Jude Math-a-thon. Please encourage your 6th grader to participate. The staff at St. Jude do remarkable work, and the groundbreaking research that is done there is shared with medical teams around the world. It’s a wonderful chance to help others and show gratitude for our gift of good health. Math-a-thon Funbooks will go home on Friday, Jan. 28.
