8th Grade Information (March 1-5)

8th graders have another Confirmation requirement due this week.  Their letter to Fr. Tim requesting the sacrament of Confirmation is due on March 3.  I am happy to help proofread their letter if they bring it in on Monday.  Several of the students have all 8 of their required service projects complete, and their reports turned in.  If your 8th grader has not finished his/her service project reports, please encourage completion as soon as possible.

Stations of the Cross are Tuesday at 8:40 a.m.

8B students will be presenting a special Stations of the Cross next Tuesday afternoon (March 9 at 2:30 p.m.).  They will be in costume, and acting the parts of people that Jesus met on his road to Calvary.

8th Grade Math (March 1-5)

8th graders will be completing Unit 5 this week.  I am looking forward to their “Ramp Projects”, which they will demonstrate on Friday.  This is a great problem solving exercise, and I am excited to see how the 8th graders manage it.  (Remember, I don’t want you to spend much money on this project.  Use cardboard and duct tape, or scrap lumber that you have in the garage.)

Monday:  Probability and Counting
Do p. 386-387 (1-7, 11-13)

Tuesday:  Review & Assessment
Do p. 390-391 (1-32)

7th Grade Math (March 1-5)

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, 7th grade students will take the Algebra Aptitude Test.  This test, along with their 6th/7th grade ITBS math score, 6th/7th report card grade in math, along with a strong teacher recommendation will help determine if they are recommended for Algebra during their 8th grade year.  This is not a test that you study for; it is a readiness test.  Please encourage your 7th grader to get a good night’s sleep the night before, and have a good breakfast the morning of the test.

We will work with a variety of topics this week, in 7th grade math.  We will use autogyros, which are flyers that resemble a very simple helicopter, to explore geometric probability.  Kites will be the focus as we work with square roots and surface area of prisms.

6th Grade Math (March 1-5)

6th graders brought in some very interesting items to display on Friday.  We all enjoyed our “Exhibit of Everyday Objects”.  Now it is time to move on to Unit 6, where we will be doing lots of work with ratio, proportion, and percent.

Monday:  Exploring Ratios/Rates
Do p. 393-395 (1-15, 22-28)

Do p. 411 (1-2)

Plan on the Unit 6 Quiz on Tuesday.

8th Grade Information (Feb. 22-26)

The 6th-8th graders are excited about Tuesday’s field trip to Circa 21.  In the morning, all students will be involved in learning sessions that involve topics such as “Find Your Face” (stage make-up), “From the Page to the Stage” (designing and creating a stage set), and “Stage Combat-The Art of Non-violence” (fake fighting), and “Hip Hop:  Get Your Body Groovin!”(hip hop and street dance moves).  Students had 10 different choices of session topics to choose from.

A buffet lunch will be served at noon, followed by a performance of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”.  What a great opportunity for our Lourdes middle school students!

8th grade girls after the show

6th, 7th, and 8th graders also enjoyed a day on the slopes on Friday, March 19, thanks to Mr. Sawyer’s outdoor education.  I will include some photos of 8th graders enjoying the day.

8th Grade Math (Feb. 22-26)

I introduced “Tangent” (opposite/adjacent) to the 8th graders last week, but we will spend a bit more time with that concept this week, especially as it relates to the upcoming “Ramp Project”. Now would be a good time for 8th grade math students to begin drawing up plans for their ramp.  Once they are satisfied with their plans, it is time to build and test the ramp, so that it works well when they present it towards the end of next week.  (Please do not go to a hardware store and buy expensive materials.  Use cardboard/duct tape or scrap wood that you have in the garage.)  This is a great problem solving activity.

Monday:  Building a Ramp/Extra Skill Practice
Do p. 368 (1-22, 1-2)

Tuesday:  No math today; Circa 21 field trip

Wednesday:  Counting and Permutations
Do p. 378 (1-12)

Thursday:  Combinations
Do p. 379-380 (13-16, 20-26)

Friday:  Building a Ramp/ Pascal’s Triangle
Do p. 381 (1-10, 1-2)

Plan on the Unit 5 Test next Wednesday/Thursday and your Ramp demonstration next Friday.

7th Grade Math (Feb. 22-26)

7th graders will be finishing Unit 5 this week, with the Unit 5 Test.  Then we will begin Unit 6, which is an interesting unit on “Flight”.  Students will work with autogyros and biplanes.  They will also create a type of glider called a “Wild Wing”.  Toward the end of the unit, we will go outside for some test flights using the wild wing gliders that the students created.

7th Graders will be taking the Algebra Aptitude Test next Tuesday and Wednesday in their regularly scheduled math class.

Monday:  Unit 5 Test
No assignment.

Tuesday:  No math today; Circa 21 field trip.

Wednesday:  Finish Unit 5 Test
No assignment.

Thursday:  Inequalties

Friday:  Areas of Polygons
Do p. 391 (13-18)

6th Grade Math (Feb. 22-26)

This will be a very sh0rt week for 6th grade math students, due to field trips.  Most of the week will be occupied by taking the Unit 5 Test.  On Friday, we will have our “Exhibit of Everyday Objects”.  It’s always lots of fun to see the choices that 6th graders make for objects that have a “beautiful design”.  When everyone brings in their object, it really is an impressive display.

Monday:  Unit 5 Test
No assignment, but make sure that your display card and summary are complete for Friday’s exhibit.

Tuesday:  No math today; Circa 21 field trip

Wednesday:  No math for 6B; 6A will continue to work on the Unit 5 Test.

Thursday:  Finish Unit 5 Test

Friday:  An Exhibit of Everyday Objects
Students display their object with the display card that they created.  A summary for the exhibit catalog will be turned in today  (see p. 375, #8 for details on what to include).

8th Grade Math (Feb. 16-19)

8th graders have a rather abbreviated math week this week, due to President’s Day, a Healthy Food Sale, and the annual ski trip.  However, we will accomplish what we can, with most of our focus being spent on learning “The Tangent Ratio”.  This is very basic trigonometry, and I am confident that your son or daughter can use and understand this new concept.

Do p. 364 (1-22)

Wednesday:  The Tangent Ratio
Do p. 364-366 (23-29)
